Choosing an OEM partner is a long-term decision. Get it wrong and you carry the cost for years. Here are the seven questions we recommend asking any factory before signing.
1. What happens inside your factory vs. what is subcontracted?
If a factory subcontracts its core process, quality control gets complicated. Ask for a list of in-house processes and which parts are outsourced.
2. Can you show me your in-process QC records?
A good factory documents quality at every step — incoming material, machining, assembly, final test. Ask for sample reports.
3. How do you handle specification changes?
Engineering changes happen. What matters is how fast and how transparently the factory reacts, and whether change orders are documented.
4. What is your testing procedure before shipment?
Final inspection should include a functional test, not just a visual check. Ask what is tested and how results are recorded.
5. How do you price volume breaks?
Understand the cost structure: tooling, sample cost, and how the unit price changes with quantity. A transparent factory shares this openly.
6. Who will I actually talk to?
Engineer-to-engineer communication is the difference between a smooth project and a painful one. Ask who handles technical queries and their response time.
7. What happens if something fails in the field?
Warranty terms, replacement process and claim handling reveal a lot about long-term reliability.
